Aurelia Varner Hazlegrove, age 96, of Farmville, VA passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2014. She was born in Buckingham County on September 5, 1917 to the late Willis Anderson and Nannie Allen Varner. She is the widow of Joseph Anderson Hazlegrove, Sr. The loves of her life were her family, her church, her farm, and her flowers. Matron of the extended Hazlegrove and Varner clans, she shared her wisdom, caring concern, and dry wit with kinsmen, friends, and neighbors. A product of the Great Depression, she was well accustomed to hard work and responsibility. These virtues served her well as she partnered with her husband, Joe, to transform a labor intensive tobacco operation into a diversified dairy, beef, and forage enterprise. Having received her degree from Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood University) in 1938, she taught in several public schools for over 20 years. She is survived by her five children: Allen Perkins Hazlegrove (and wife, Karen), Joseph Anderson Hazlegrove, Jr. (and wife, Juanita), David Winston Hazlegrove (and wife, Mary), Nancy Ellen Schaeffer, and Catherine Jean Hazlegrove; one brother, John Hopkins Varner; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers Herbert Leroy, Herman Anderson, Harold Earl, Willis Nicholson, Lawrence Cary, Allen Ford, and Robert Claude and her sister, Catherine V. Gordon. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Guinea Presbyterian Church on the Guinea Road in Cumberland County at 11:00AM. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 from 5:00PM – 8:00PM at the Puckett Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Guinea Presbyterian Church, 682 River Road, Farmville, VA 23901 or a favorite charity. Puckett Funeral Home is serving the family. www.puckettfh.com
