Betty Mull Massey

May 12, 1933 — July 24, 2024

Farmville, VA

Betty Jean (Mull) Massey, 91, of Farmville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 24, with loved ones by her side.

Born May 12, 1933 in Natural Bridge, Virginia, Betty will be remembered as a kind and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. During her youth, Betty’s family moved from Natural Bridge to Farmville and later to Bryson City, North Carolina where she attended Swain County Public Schools. In School, she played basketball and was on the cheerleading squad. She also enjoyed cooking and bike riding.

During her time in Bryson City, Betty met the love of her life, Mckay E. Massey. The two were married May 4, 1949 in Clayton, Georgia and later moved to Farmville.

Betty held many jobs over the years including her role as a bookkeeper at Baldwin’s Department Store and as a bank teller for both Peoples National Bank and Benchmark Community Bank. She also spent 20 years working as a secretary for the local Dark-Fired Tobacco Market and was well-known across Farmville as the local “Fuller Brush Lady” and as Den Mother to countless Cub Scouts.

As tender-hearted and caring as she was hardworking, Betty loved to spend her free time gardening and sewing and always gave selflessly to friends and family in need of a helping hand, be it through money, a meal, clothes or a roof over their head.

Betty is survived by her loving son, Thomas (Keith) Massey; daughter-in-law Diana D. Massey; and grandchildren Derek Ryan, Alexa René and Sarah Michelle who knew her affectionately as “Nana.” She also leaves behind sister Ellen Ann Mull and brother Franklin D. Mull as well as many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Mckay; her parents, Thomas J. Mull and Idah M. Mull; as well as siblings Thomas E. Mull, Lloyd J. Mull, Douglas N. Mull and Coleen M. Inge.

A visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 28, at Heritage Baptist Church located at 700 Milnwood Rd. in Farmville followed by funeral services at 3 p.m. Directly after funeral services, interment will occur at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice.
