David Gavin Gibson, 55, of Farmville passed away at Lynchburg General Hospital on November 10, 2018. David was born in Huntsville, Alabama to Claude and Muriel (Gow) Gibson, attended Lee High School and was an altar boy for St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Huntsville. David received his bachelor’s degree from Faulkner University. On November 7, 2009 he married Cheryl White in Nashville, TN and moved to Farmville, VA.
David was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer on October 2nd, he came home October 16th and after a short battle with infections succumbed to an overwhelming infection and multi-organ failure surrounded by his family and super awesome nurses in the medical intensive care unit early on the morning of November 10th.
David was a gregarious man who never knew a stranger. He was a morning person, he loved to sing and absolutely loved making memories with his friends and family. He loved to cook and was the first to organize a prom breakfast or a graduation party, and assisted friends with memorial services, rehearsal dinners and even a wedding reception. He believed in the power of charitable giving and gave generously of his time and talent to STEPS, Inc. where he also worked and Meals on Wheels of Prince Edward County. He tirelessly worked beside his wife and behind the scenes at two major events in Farmville. The Farmville Christmas Show which benefits STEPS and The Farmville Wine Festival which benefits Meals on Wheels and those events will not be the same without him. David loved working with his handicapped employees at STEPS. He kept them laughing and singing and they also loved him dearly. David loved music and always knew so much trivia about bands and songs. If you knew him, you also knew he was a true blue and orange blood for Auburn University football. He would love to know that they are bowl eligible this year. Most of all he loved his wife with all his heart and soul and everyone knew that.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl; his mother, Muriel Gibson, of Farmville; his son Alexander (Megan) Gibson of MO.; his daughter, Isabella Gibson, of Johnson City, TN.; a stepdaughter, Vanessa Schmidt, and granddaughter, Cali Brown of Nashville, TN; a stepson, Corey Schmidt of New Orleans, LA,; his brother John (Nancy) Gibson of Ashland City, TN. Numerous cousins including many in Europe. He considered his very best friends Kenneth and Cathey Meeks and their daughters Jennifer and Kim to be his family as did they him.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Friday November 16th at 10 am officiated by Pastor Matthew Sorenson. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 15th from 4-8 pm at Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville, Virginia. In Lieu of flowers, memorial funds will be used for his favorite charities; STEPS, Inc and Meals on Wheels; and to purchase shrubs and bulbs to enhance our home. There will be a memorial service held in Huntsville, Alabama for his many friends. Plans are being finalized at this time.
