David Lee Moore Sr

David Lee Moore Sr. of Cumberland, VA passed away on June 6, 2023, at the age of 73 while at home with family.  He was preceded in death by his father George William Moore Sr. and mother Mamie Jane Grant Moore; his brothers George, Melvin, Jack, and William; and his sister Madeline Kokotinis. He is survived by his siblings Polly Mottley (Billy), Joyce Morris (Jimmy), Debbie Watson (Kenneth), and Kenny Moore. He leaves behind his children Wendy Fink, David Moore Jr. (Susan), Robert Moore (Danielle), Daniel Moore, Beverly DeVore (James), and Sara Wyatt (Jeremy); who blessed him with a multitude of beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.

David was born on August 4, 1949, in Prince Edward County, VA to George and Mamie Moore.  He attended Prince Edward Academy; after which, he went on to work at Stackpole in Farmville, VA and at several other businesses during life. His greatest work successes included establishing, owning, and successfully operating two grocery stores (Moore’s BiRite) and Cumberland Refrigeration which provided goods and services for Cumberland and Powhatan Counties and heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration services across most of Virginia. These successes were fueled by David’s incredible work ethic and dedication to helping others; both of which are traits he passed along to his children.

David loved being outdoors and working on a variety of projects in his free time.  Although he always loved to stay on the go and dutifully tackling work around the house and community, he especially treasured the many opportunities to enjoy pursing these passions and just spending time with his numerous children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family members. David was at his happiest when he had a grandbaby or great grandbaby in his arms, while putting in a hard day’s work, or when out riding the lawnmower around his home.

David requested to be cremated.  His ashes will be spread where he loved the most – around the pond at his home. His family and friends will celebrate his life during a memorial event at his home at 2022 Anderson Highway, Cumberland, VA on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 12pm (noon).
