Donald Brent Gilliam

Donald Brent Gilliam, 74, of Pamplin, VA passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and cherished memories. 

Born on September 2, 1950, Donnie spent his life rooted in the land he loved. A farmer by heart, he found joy in the simple yet profound beauty of nature. Whether hunting in the early dawn hours or fishing in a quiet stream, he was happiest outdoors, sharing stories and moments with family and friends. 

Donnie was a graduate of Prince Edward Academy in 1968. After graduating, he went to diesel college in Nashville, TN. He then returned to Pamplin to work on the family farm with his father. Donnie was a member of the Planning Commission of Prince Edward County for 22 years. He was a lifelong member of Elon Baptist Church where he was a deacon, choir member, quartet member and Sunday school teacher. He was the president of Farm Bureau for 5 years and also President of the Cattleman’s Association. Donnie loved to dance; square dance was his favorite. 

For 22 years, Donnie worked at the Kyanite Mine in Dillwyn, VA as a foreman, heavy equipment operator, crusher operator and trainer. He was known for his strong work ethic, loyalty and comradery with his fellow workers. After retiring, he continued to embrace his passions, tending to his land and teaching younger generations the value of hard work and respect for farming. 

He is survived by his loving wife and high school sweetheart Diane Clerkin Gilliam, of 54 years, his daughter Allison Gilliam Hunter (Terry), grandchildren Adam Brent Hunter (Devon), Tiffany Hunter Morales (Anthony), great grandchildren Allen Brent and Davina Kimberley, sister Lona Gilliam Burnett (Doug) and their daughter Shannon Burnett Cadden (Shane), sister in laws Gerri Woodson and Mary Lou Cornwell (Steve) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Donnie was preceded in death by his mother and father J.A. Gilliam Jr. And June Johnston Gilliam, a daughter Tracy Lynn Gilliam, a son Donald Benjamin Gilliam and a grandson in love Kody Webb. His family will remember him for his strength, his love for the outdoors and his unwavering dedication to the people he loved most.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Donnie Gilliam’s legacy lives on in his family and the land he loved, a testament to a life well-lived. May he rest in peace. We will always love you more.
