Dorothy Glover Johns

Dorothy Glover Johns of Farmville, Virginia, died August 6, 2011 at the age of 96 after a long, full life. Dot was the wife of Melville M. Johns for 50 years until his death in 1987. She was born on January 18, 1915 in Arvonia, Virginia, to Dr. Perkins and Mable Pitts Glover. She often shared delightful stories of growing up there with her late brother, Price Glover, and a large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. She attended Westhampton College and was a graduate of Longwood College where she was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. Dot was a member of Farmville Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Judith Randolph Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Garden Study Club and for many years was active in the Longwood College Alumni Association. Dot had a quick wit and charming sense of humor, loved her family, her home and her garden, and was a respected antiquarian. She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Johns O’Brien, of Annapolis, Maryland; Sarah Johns Webb, of Bowie, Maryland; and Elizabeth Johns Holland, and her husband, Thomas E. Holland of Richmond, Virginia; five grandchildren, David O’Brien and his wife Barry O’Brien of Greenville, South Carolina; Christopher O’Brien of Annapolis, Maryland; Elizabeth Holland of Richmond, Virginia; Carson Webb and Jennifer Webb; three great-grandsons, Clay, Benjamin and Schuyler O’Brien of Greenville, South Carolina; a sister-in-law, Isobel H. Glover of New York City, New York; and her devoted friend and housekeeper of 41 years, Nannie Hunter Barksdale. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 17th at Farmville Presbyterian Church, with interment following at Grace Episcopal Church in Bremo, Virginia. Family will receive friends Tuesday, August 16, 2011 6:00-7:00pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Farmville Presbyterian Church or Arvon Presbyterian Church in Arvonia, Virginia.
