Hubert Powell Atchley

Hubert Powell Atchley 94 went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 3, 2015. He was born on September 17, 1920 in Rutherford County, NC to the late James Ruel Atchley and Della Ensley Atchley. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, the former Ann Elizabeth Kidd and brothers Robert, Horace and Arnold Atchley. A member of the Greatest Generation, Atchley was a veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945 after serving tours of duty in Italy and North Africa. For over 35 years he worked in retail business in Farmville before retiring in 1986 from Schewels Furniture. He was also a member of Farmville Lodge #41. Atchley is survived by his son, Hubert Jr. and wife Elizabeth, of Roanoke, granddaughter, Ann Stewart and husband Chris of Ashburn, grandson, Allen Atchley and wife Nina of Bridgewater, NJ, great grandchildren; Noah and Emily Stewart, Nathan and Will Atchley, a sister; Elizabeth Harrison of Rutherfordton, NC and a number of beloved nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and residents of The Woodlands for making his stay there for the last few years so pleasant and rewarding. The family request memorial contributions be made to Smyrna United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, Sheppards, VA. A Masonic service will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 1:00PM in the chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with visitation at 1:30PM followed by a funeral service at 2:30PM.
