James H. Amick, Jr. departed this life on Sept. 4, 2023. He was born August 26, 1937 to the late James H. Amick, Sr. and Lula Walkup Amick. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Katie M. Amick and a grandson, Joshua D. Pierce, sisters, Josephine Spaur and Maryanne Massey. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Slayton Amick, mother-in-law, Joyce A. Slayton, children, Vickie Woodbury (Bill) and Terri Deberry (Mike), 4 grandchildren, Laura and Ryan Brogan, Nathan and Jessica Woodbury, Alan and Katie Woodbury, Sarah and Jimmy Gendron, and 3 great-grandchildren, Reed and Lane Brogan, and Elias Woodbury. Also, a brother, Charles Amick (Janet). He is also survived by a friend who was like a son to him, Anthony L. Farmer and his grandchildren Lexis and Landen Crook. He also had several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Amick worked a various jobs including The Washington Star and Richmond Newspapers. He was called into the ministry in the early seventies, where he moved about 5 times pastoring different churches before returning to Virginia. He also worked for the Salvation Army, where he cooked and helped those in need.
He then bought a Christian bookstore business in 1985 and was still working at the store until his health started to decline. His mission was to bring people to the Lord. He loved talking to people and making sure that when they passed away, they knew where they were going for eternity.
Per his wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no funeral service.
The family would like to thank the staff at Holly Manor for their care for him while he was there.
