Janice was born in the old hospital in Farmville on July 28, 1952, She died under Hospice care at The Woodland in Farmville on August 19, 2024--the day before her 52nd Wedding Anniversary. She began her amazing life on her parents farm in Buckingham County, where she lived until graduating from high school in 1970. She moved back to Farmville to attend Longwood College, where she met Ty Campbell, the young Associate Pastor of the Farmville Baptist Church. Following a whirlwind courtship, they were married on August 20, 1972 in her home church, Glenmore Methodist in Buckingham. They fell in love with Vermont while on their honeymoon in New England. She then moved to Charlotte Court House (where her husband was called as pastor of the Mt. Tirzah Baptist Church) and met Debbie Vassar, her life--long friend until Debbie passed away. After receiving the diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis in 1975, she returned to Farmville to continue her studies at Longwood, where she met Gayle Brinkly, her best friend for life. Janice graduated from Longwood in1978 with a BA in ART and soon became a very creative self-employed artist in several media. In 1979, Janice served as general contractor when she and Ty built a house with logs from Vermont in Buckingham. Then in1982, Janice moved to Lynchburg when Ty received the call to serve the historic First Baptist Church in downtown. On November 3, 1984, Janice gave birth to her only son, J Quincy Tyler Campbell at the UVA Medical Center. When Ty retired from First Baptist in 1989, they moved to Bennington Vermont and purchased a home with a basement big enough for Janice to set up her own pottery studio, "Burnt Offerings." This brief summary is just a beginning; if you knew Janice, you can fill in what you want about her later career. If you did not know her, you missed a treasure of total humanity. As Ty remarked, After 52 years of life together, he was still discovering more of Janice! Janice is survived by her husband Ty and son Quincy, her brother Bill Jones, of Buckingham and brother-in-law Mark Campbell of North Caroline, a sister-in law Molly Schalmo of Ohio, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and other family throughout the country. There will be no visitation or formal services. Instead, Ty suggests folks gather in small intimate groups where individuals can share their favorite memories of Janice and how she coped with a serious neuromuscular disorder all her adult life, and lived her simple belief that "GOD IS LOVE."
Indeed, Janice's life was a living example of what the Apostle Paul called the "Fruit of the Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Generosity, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-control" [Galatians 5 22-23, New RSV]
