John (Jack) Herbert Greenhalgh, Sr., 85 passed away Monday, August 5, 2013 in Farmville. He was born February 25, 1928 in Lowell, Massachusetts, son of Marion (Kydd) Greenhalgh and Alan Edward Greenhalgh. As a boy, Jack sang soprano on the local radio station and during Sunday church services. After graduating from Sanborn Seminary, he received a degree in accounting from Franklin Pierce College. Jack was a member of the Naval Reserve and later joined the Air Force during the Korean War. He taught A & E mechanics at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas and had a pilot's license. He and his family lived in Groton, Massachusetts for 25 years, where he pursued a career as a Real Estate broker and appraiser. He was a Boy Scout Master for 20 years, Police Officer in Groton and Pepperell Massachusetts for 21 years. He loved to write and tell stories about his grandchildren, his flying experiences and living on the Island of St. Croix. Jack was a 32nd degree Mason and Past Patron of Eastern Star. He worked for Green Properties as the office manager for the past 3 years. He is survived by his wife Barbara (Fletcher) of 62 years and his children Karen (Jack Donnelly), Charlotte (Janet Green), John, James (deceased) Lisa (Dennis Richards), and Amy. He had 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. We will remember him for his humor and wonderful smile. A celebration of Jack's life will be held at August 10, 2013 10:00am at Johns Memorial Episcopal Church. After the service, all are invited to a time of fellowship and refreshments at Johns Memorial Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish to contribute in memory of Jack may donate to Johns Memorial Episcopal Church for the Youth Programs, 400 High Street, Farmville, VA 23901.
