On Monday, August 19, 2019, Lena Rose Huddleston, loving Mother, Granny, and Great Granny passed away at the age of 79. Lena Rose was born in Prince Edward County on January 23, 1940 to the late Charles "Dick" and Visa Simpson. She was also preceded in death by her brother Richard Simpson.
On July 12, 1958, she married Tommy and they shared 58 years of marriage before his death in 2016. They raised a daughter, Debbie and a son, Thomas Charles.
During her 79 years she wore many hats. She was a nurses’ aide, school bus driver and teachers assistant at Prince Edward Academy, helped Tommy run a dairy farm and was Prince Edward cannery manager for 40 years. She was known as the "stewmaster” and for many years she helped the PE Ruritan Club with their annual fall Brunswick Stew.
Lena Rose was a long time member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church, volunteered with the American Red Cross and the John Randolph Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She never met a stranger and had an unforgettable laugh and loved a good joke.
She is survived by a daughter, Debbie Grantham and husband Mark of Midlothian, son Thomas Charles and wife Amy of Cumberland, grandchildren, Jenna Cava (Steve) of Richmond, Kristin Grantham (Tyler) of Midlothian, Mary Huddleston (John) and Thomas (Olivia) of Cumberland and a great-grandson David Cava. Also survived by sisters Mildred Bales, Peggy Kelsey, and Polly Duncan and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family would like to thank the Shetler and Miller families for loving her like she was part of their families. Special thanks to Dorcas Shetler for the wonderful care she provided over the years.
Graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 24th at 11:00 am at Trinity Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to John Randolph Volunteer Fire Department.
