On Sunday, November 24, 2024 Marie Driskill Elliott joined her loved ones in heaven. Born on April 22, 1928, she graced the world with 96 extraordinary years.
Marie was one of four children born to Flave and Clara Driskill of Abilene. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Lucille Bowman and Mildred Nelson Harvey, and her brother Ed Driskill. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her nieces Gloria Bowman Divers, Barbara Driskill Barden and Judy Nelson Hanlon, as well as her nephews William Wayne Nelson and Elliott Bondurant. Numerous great-nieces and nephews will deeply miss her warm and caring presence.
Though Marie had no children of her own, she embraced a nurturing role in the lives of many. She cherished her special bond with longtime friends Judy and Dom Dimeo, who became family while living in the apartment at her home. Marie and Judy shared countless evenings together over a glass of wine, conversation and a cigarette. Additionally, her neighbor and friend Branden Clarke, whom she affectionately called her “adopted grandson”, held a special place in her heart and was always there to help her with anything she needed.
She married the love of her life Lillius Benjamin (Benny) Elliott on August 9, 1952. They shared 30 beautiful years together before he passed in 1982. Together they enjoyed golfing, working in their garden and spending time with family and friends. Benny built their forever home on Fourth Avenue Ext., humorously referred to by their friends as his “hobby” because it took so long to finish.
Marie had a fulfilling career, working alongside her sister Lucille at the Hotel Weynoke before joining VEPCO (Dominion Power), where she dedicated many years and eventually retired. She was also a devoted member of Farmville United Methodist Church.
Marie’s humor and zest for life were evident in the sign that graced her porch, which read: “I’m getting so old all my friends in heaven are going to think I didn’t make it.”
We are certain you made it, Marie. Your legacy of love, kindness, and humor will live on in all who knew you.
