Mary Ellen Allen Walter, 90, died peacefully on December 18, 2018 at The Woodland in Farmville. She was born in Glendive, Montana, on August 29, 1928, and was the daughter of Edwin Hubert Moore (1900-1990) and Rebecca Lydia Brooks Moore (1904-1995). She is survived by daughters Barbara Allen of Balsam, North Carolina, Jennifer Allen Tichacek (Bill) of King William, and Sandra Allen Shiflet (Douglas) of Huntsville, Ohio; grandchildren Tyler Nicole Tichacek Pola (Jeff) of San Francisco, California, Trevor Tichacek of Richmond, Christopher Shiflet of Crested Butte, Colorado, and Phillip Shiflet (Stephanie) of Hilliard, Ohio, one great-grandson, Christian Shiflet, sister-in-law Norma Allen Pugh of Lynchburg, as well as many nieces and nephews. Her husbands Sanford Phillip Allen and Floyd Walter, daughter Nancy Allen and brothers, Harold and Charles Moore, preceded her in death.
Mary Ellen attended Scottsville High School, and with the encouragement of one of her teachers, attended State Teachers College (Longwood University) and graduated in 1949. She taught high school in Cumberland County for 35 years. She was a member of Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church and served on the Cumberland County Library Board for many years. She loved to travel, enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens, sewing, jigsaw puzzles, and reading.
The family wishes to thank all who cared for her at The Woodland, especially Kathy Shelley & Wendy in the Watson Center.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Puckett Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2019, with the family receiving friends on hour prior to the service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cumberland County Library.
