Mary Frances Overton, age 85, died Thursday, June 13, 2019 with her family and dedicated companions Cindy VanDyke and Cassandra Johnson beside her.
Mary was a dedicated employee for Dr. James A. McClellan, Optometrist in Farmville, VA for over 40 years before retiring in 2010. She enjoyed her work and loved interacting with the patients who would only come to Mary for their adjustments with their glasses. She was generous, humble, and kind. Her faith in God was steadfast to the end. Along with Otto, she was a founding member of the Farmville Church of Christ where she remained a member. Mary was known as the Matriarch of the Overton family. She provided leadership, guidance, prayers, and laughter to the family. She was born July 13, 1933 in Rice, Prince Edward County, VA, the daughter of the late Oscar and Sallie Thompson. She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband of 62 years, Otto S. Overton; brother James Rouse Thompson; brothers in law James Watson Overton, Jr.(Jack), Edward Overton, Sr. (Baldy), Campbell “PeeWee” Overton, Wyatt Lee Overton and sister in-laws Breetie Overton Jenkins, Grace Overton Tuttle, Shirley Brooks Overton, and Ann Ewers Overton; niece Cynthia Overton Atkins.
She is survived by her daughter, Sallie Frances Overton Amos; son in law, Richard “Eddie” Amos; and the pride and joy of her life, her granddaughter, Mary Grace Amos; brother, Samuel Lee Thompson of Rice, VA; brother in law, W. Quinton Overton, Sr. of Rocky Mount, VA; and sisters in law Carolyn Hudgins Overton and Linda Overton of Farmville. She leaves behind 4 nieces, Sherry Sheffield, Grace Helms, Rhonda Fox, and Margaret “Cissy” Coleman; and 8 nephews, Wayne Myers, Frank L. Overton, Henry Webb, Wyatt L. Overton, Jr., W. Quinton Overton, Jr., Eugene Edward Overton, Jr., David Wayne Overton, and James A. Overton-all who she loved like her own.
A private funeral will be held on Saturday June 15, 2019 at 11 AM at Westview Cemetery in Farmville.
