Nancy Belle Matherly Anderson, 89, died Tuesday July 24, 2012 at home with her daughter in Farmville, VA. Nancy was born September 24, 1922 to parents Alonzo Clifton “Lonnie” Matherly and Corinna Belle James, in Beech Creek, KY and grew up in Russellville, KY. In 1940, at age 17, Nancy married pilot Jack Anderson. World War II began shortly afterwards, and Jack joined the Navy. After Jack’s death, in 1990, Nancy moved to Farmville, VA to be near Jackie and her three “precious” grandchildren. She played with numerous bridge and mahjong groups and achieved “Life Master” status as a duplicate bridge player. She also found the time to be active with her church and circle, drive for Meals on Wheels, and do volunteer work at the local school and hospital. Ms. Anderson was preceded in death by her parents, husband CAPT John Ellsworth Anderson, USN, and seven sisters and brothers: Mildred Cox, Louise Fisher, Edith Kathleen Velie, Jo Nell Nilsson, Bess Caroline Martin, James Edward Matherly, and William Penrod Matherly.
