Callan, Nancy Ellen Hatfield died January 1, 2010 at her residence in Pamplin, Virginia; after another battle with cancer. She was born May 8, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Ruth Barkley and Ewell Warren Hatfield, who predeceased her. She grew up in Charleston, W. Va. and graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School. She received her B.S. degree in Zoology from the University of Kentucky were she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and Eta Sigma Phi (National Classical Honorary). She received a graduate Teaching Fellowship at University of West Virginia.
She later moved to Richmond, VA where she worked as a Biological Research Technician for A. H.
Robins. She moved to Boston, Mass. In l960 and worked under Research grants from Harvard and
Tufts Medical Schools. She also worked for Arthur D. Little Co. in Industrial research on animals on Cancer Chemotherapy.
She married Bernard Jerome Callan in l968, and they moved to Greene, Me., which resulted in a career move, She was hired to open the branch office in Lewiston, ME for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company as Personnel Manager. Initially she employed 20 employees that grew to over 400 in 4 years. After the birth of their daughter, Jessica, she became a stay at home mother. She served l0 years in elective offices in Greene on the Planning Board, Board of Appeals and the revamping of Land Use Ordinances. After her daughter started school Nancy began working for the Auburn, Me Head Start in a part time capacity. She loved the children and loved the work. Because of that she retuned to school at the U of Me and was earned an Early Childhood Development associate degree.
She moved to Virginia in 1992 when her husband relocated for work reasons. She loved being back South. Many wonderful friends were made here, for which she was very grateful. Mrs. Callan was a member of NSDAR chapter of Judith Randolph Longwood. A member of Johns Memorial Episcopal Church and Buffalo Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Just A Mere Club for many years, an avid reader and bridge player.
She is survived by her husband of (41) years, Bernard Jerome Callan, a daughter, Jessica Barkley Somers Suit of Spencer, W.VA. , and her husband David, two grandsons, Dean and Wyatt Somers, her brother, Dr. Kenneth B. Hatfield of Wilmette, Ill., a stepdaughter, Mary I. Callan and her husband, Jake Collier, step-grandchildren Alexis and Ryan Collier, of Solang, California, a stepson, Dana Paul Callan of Maine and a step-grandaughter, Ashley Callan also of Maine.
A funeral service was held Monday, January 4, 2010 2:00PM at Johns Memorial Episcopal Church with interment in Westview Cemetery.
