Nancy Joyce Bradley Elder (Joyce), of Brookneal, VA peacefully passed from this life into eternity with Jesus, her LORD and Savior, on January 21, 2022, at her home following a brief illness.
She was born on June 3, 1938 in Hopewell, VA to the late Atlas Lamar and Bridie Daniel Bradley. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Carlton Lamar Bradley.
Joyce was the loving and faithful wife of Gene Oliver Elder for 36 years, caring for him through his battle with cancer until his death in 1991. She was employed later in life as a sitter for Mary Sadler Services for a short time, but retired to take care of her mother and a grandson. From the time her children were born and regarding her beloved mother, Bridie, there was no work more important to her than taking care of her family which she did willingly and selflessly. The happiest times of her life were when she was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, cousins, and her Falling River Baptist Church family where she was an active member for most of her life. Making people feel loved and special and her desire to serve others were her spiritual gifts. She was so proud of all her children and grandchildren and took every opportunity to let them know it.
Joyce is survived by three sons: Michael L. Elder of Huntersville, NC, Kenneth W. Elder (Tammy) of Brookneal, VA, David A. Elder (Kelly) of Appomattox, VA, and one daughter, Cindy R. Wingert (Paul) of Columbus, OH. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren: Jacob and Grayson Elder of Huntersville, NC, Chris Elder and wife, Kirsty, of Selkirk, Scotland, Anna, Erin, Sara, Joel, and Seth Elder of Appomattox, VA, and Patrick, Matthew, Luke, and Christina Wingert of Columbus, OH.
She also leaves behind a legacy of two special sisters-in-law, many special cousins, nieces and nephews, (including great) whom she loved dearly. We are especially thankful for her great-niece, Jessie Keller, and her love, compassion, and care in helping us to give Joyce the dignity and respect she deserved in her last days.
A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 2:00 pm at Falling River Baptist Church in Brookneal. Visitation will be 1:00 pm prior to the service and the family will be at her home following the service.
