Patricia "Peggy" Simpson Kelsey

April 22, 1935 — June 26, 2024

Prospect, VA

Patricia Anne “Peggy” Simpson Kelsey, 89, departed her life Wednesday, June 26, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Peggy was born April 22, 1935, to the late Charles Archer Simpson and Visa Lowe of Prospect.

Peggy graduated from Farmville High School and attended Longwood College. In January 1955, she married Raymond Hardy Kelsey, Sr., who precedes her in death. They lived in Sparta, TN, Appomattox, VA, and Lynchburg, VA before settling in Prospect to raise their family. Peggy began her career at the Department of Health in Lynchburg and moved to Prince Edward County Social Services where she worked through retirement.

She was dedicated to her family and to Appomattox P. E. Presbyterian Church, Prospect. An avid Hampden-Sydney fan especially supporting the basketball team, she also enjoyed Washington Nationals baseball, spending time with her family, attending any social event from HSC Roundball Club and the Farmville Women’s flower club groups, and being a part of her church family.

She is survived by two sons: Philander Kelsey (Teresa) of Midlothian and Raymond Hardy Kelsey, Jr., (Terry Coleman) of Prospect; two daughters: Karen Kelsey of Dover, NH, and Kimberley Kelsey Shumaker (Michael) of Prospect; grandchildren: Eric Kelsey of Midlothian, Phillip R. Kelsey (Rachel) of Chesterfield, Abby Aimesbury of Dover, NH, Debra Sue Shumaker of Prospect, Darrell Shumaker (Anne Harrison) of Midlothian, and Celena Kelsey Lee (Derek) of Appomattox; great-grandchildren: Bryson, Elle, and Grayson of Chesterfield, James, Kelsey Rae, and Matthew of Midlothian; and many close nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her grandson, Army Ranger CPL Andrew A. Aimesbury; and siblings Polly Duncan (twin sister), Lena Rose Huddleston, Mildred ‘Mutt’ Bales, and Richard Simpson.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the Woodland Brookview team members under the direction of Katelyn Townsend and to the Amedisys Hospice group.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 6, from 4-6 p.m. at Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, July 7, at 3 p.m. at the Appomattox P. E. Presbyterian Church located at 198 Church Road in Prospect.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Appomattox P. E. Presbyterian Church, or to the CPL Andrew A. Aimesbury Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Dover, New Hampshire, Adult Learning Center.
