Richard A. “Dick” Burrell, 97 of Farmville, VA died on Friday, August 22, 2014. He was the son of the late Allan and Stella Burrell and was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances H. Burrell and his sister, “Teddy” Payne. A World War II Chief Specialist in the U.S. Coast Guard, he taught and coached at Clarksville, Emporia, Highland Springs High Schools and Woodberry Forest School prior to returning to his alma mater as Athletic Director and Sports Information Director of Hampden-Sydney College. He was a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame at Highland Springs and Hamden-Sydney. He was a past Master of Sandston Masonic Lodge 216. Also he was a church deacon, choir member and Sunday school teacher. He is survived by his wife, Christine Hadel and his daughters, Carolyn B. Farley (Billy) of Altavista, VA and Barbara B. Wheeler of Richmond, VA, step-daughter, Becky Cochran (Ben) of Lakeland, FL, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 25, 2014 2:00pm at the chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment to follow at College Church Cemetery in Hamden-Sydney. Family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00-2:00pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to your local association aiding the deaf or an Altzhiemers Association.
