Richard Phillip Lash

July 18, 1935 — February 4, 2014

Richard Phillip Lash, 78 of Farmville passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014. He was born in Wheeling, WV July 18, 1935 to the late Harold A. Lash and Margaret Jo Baird Lash. He attended Bethany College in WV where he played football, basketball and baseball and is in the school's Sports Hall of Fame. He then joined the Marine Corps and trained at Quantico. Dick married the former Dorothy O'Konski and they spent the next 3 years in Hawaii where Dick was based at Kaneohe Marine Base. He became a Captain in the Marine Corps. After Marine Corps he attended Insurance training in Hartford, CN and was sent to work with Aetna Ins in Richmond, VA. In 1962 he joined F. W. Hubbard Insurance Agency in Farmville. After buying out the former owners the name was changed to Hubbard-Lash Ins. Dick was an active member of the Farmville Jaycee’s where he served as President (1966-1967) and was honored as a Lifetime Jaycee. In 1969 he became a member of the advisory board of Farmville branch of Virginia National Bank. Additionally, he became a member of the Board of Directors of Southside Community Hospital in 1970 and served on the Board for over 35 years during which he was President of the Board. Dick was a Deacon of Farmville Presbyterian Church and served outlying churches as a guest minister. He also was involved with the Boy Scouts and served on the Board of Zoning Appeals. Dick was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Robert Lash and recently by his daughter, Vicki Lynn Sharkey. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lash; his daughters, Sue Ellen Edwards (Rob), Leslie McGuire (Trent) and Betsy Snead (Shawn) and his eight grandchildren, Ryan Sharkey, Robyn Torkelson (Josh), Samantha Sharkey, Zach Edwards, Smith McGuire, Jake McGuire, Keegan Snead and Kaleigh Snead. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 2:00pm at Farmville Presbyterian Church. Family will receive friends on Friday, February 7, 2014 6:00-8:00pm at Puckett Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Farmville Presbyterian Church, 200 West Third Street, Farmville, VA 23901 or to Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia.
